On the Second Amendment,

Don’t Believe Obama!

The presidential primary season is finally over, and it is now time for gun owners to take a careful look at just where apparent nominee Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. During the primaries, Obama tried to hide behind vague statements of support for “sportsmen” or unfounded claims of general support for the right to keep and bear arms.

But his real record, based on votes taken, political associations, and long standing positions, shows that Barack Obama is a serious threat to Second Amendment liberties. Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career.

Opinion on Chicago "Anti-Violence" (read, "anti-gun") Rally.

Great opinion piece on the rally: Full post is here.

Spend tens of thousands of dollars to pimp your kids out to call for more money and gun bans. That'll fix the problem.

CHICAGO - Thousands of Chicago Public Schools students are expected to fill Soldier Field today in a rally demanding more funding for education.

The students are also expected to push for more anti-violence programs.

Students from all over Chicago will be bused to Soldier Field for the "Shout-Out for Schools" rally. Mayor Richard Daley and public schools CEO Arne Duncan are expected to attend.

As we've seen, every time they call for more "anti-violence programs", it usually has more to do w/ banning guns than trying to sway kids away from actually committing violence.

Radio Interview of Billy Jackson (70) Defends Himself Against 2 Home Intruders.

While we are in Illinois, and this happened in Kentucky, the audio is interesting and revealing - the "I'm going home to see my wife and kids" mentality may keep you fighting when the chips are down...

Property owner Billy Jackson shot and killed two men who he said were trying to rob him.
Listen to the interview.

Jackson said he was sprucing up an apartment in the house he owns at 3517 West Broadway when two masked men forced their way inside. He said one had a large gun, and threatened to kill him and his wife.

"I figured I was going to die and they were going to die, too," said Jackson. "I faked a heart attack; shot him in the side."

The coroner released the names of the alleged intruders late Wednesday afternoon. They are Earl Springer and Dazmond Turner, both 19.

"It just seems like I'm going to lay down, wake up and this is not happening," said Stephanie Roach, Turner's great aunt. She said Turner's death doesn't seem real. She said he once had dreams of NBA stardom, but she never dreamed he would be accused of invading a home.

"It's just something that he wouldn't do and it's been eating at me all night long. It's like, no, that's not Daz," she said. "I don't know if he was forced into doing it, but that is not my nephew."

"At least one of the suspects was armed with a handgun," said Metro Police Detective Phil Russell.

"The property owner was assaulted. He sustained minor injuries."

Police said Springer died at the scene, while Turner died early Wednesday morning at University Hospital.

"They will confer with the commonwealth attorney's office in order to determine if charges need to be placed," Russell said. "At this time in the investigation, it looks as though this was self-defense."

Family members said Turner was once a star point guard for Valley High School who was working toward getting his GED while preparing to be a first-time father this summer.

Roach said family members thought Turner was out of town at the time of the shooting. Now they wish he would have followed through on those plans.

"That's what's shocking everybody. He was supposed to be in Florida to reunite with his mother and his sisters," Roach said. "Now, they're on their way to bury him."

Of course the families of the intruders are saying they those "kids" were the "greatest people in the world"... Sigh...

Spartan Tactical Training Group Review: Advanced Pistol 1

Saturday, June 7th was hot, humid and stormy - tornados would ravage Northwest Indiana and Chicago's South suburbs...

...But I'm still spinning from attending Spartan Tactical Training Group excellent "Advanced Pistol 1: Developing Reflexive Gun-handling Skills" class, tornados be damned!

Taught by John Krupa III and Vince Jamison, whose combined curriculum vitaes read like laundry lists of every possible cool shooting courses ever known, the course focused on, (surprise...) the development of reflexive pistol-handling skills. Most of the classroom teaching was delivered by Krupa, who is a fantastic instructor with a very witty, down-to-earth demeanor, delivering information with great humor and gusto.

The core of the class focused on developing the "Natural Action Stance", which had been developed through research identifying the stress-reactions of people in aggressive confrontations. It compliments the body’s natural tendency to square to a threat, lean forward slightly, and get mobile (weight on balls of feet). Being a boxer, I found that the stance mimicked the "peek-a-boo" stance very closely. After stance development, a heavy emphasis was placed on moving laterally off the line of force.

Krupa stated that the reason a new, stress-compatible posture was necessary in training is because many agencies (Krupa and Jamison are both law enforcement) focus on basic weapon familiarization and that there is a significant disconnect between a department qualifier and the real world. He dug out hard statistical data (FBI 2005), which showed that the same officers that are required to perform 70% or better on qualifiers hit only 18% of the time in real situations. He further argued that the rank-and-file’s averages are probably even worse since the statistics include SWAT and Rapid Response teams who are usually better trained and equipped.

With footwork in place and assessed under Jamison's careful tutelage, the pistol was added in a self-indexing thumbs forward grip which enabled the student to point naturally, using the thumbs, at the target. We then practiced moving the pistol out, lining up the sights, breaking a shot, following through with a second sight picture of the target before resetting to the ready position.

Next, Krupa and Co. would give either verbal commands or audible Pact timer beeps to ingrain a "step laterally, fire a number of shots" reflex into the students. We worked running the gun from 2-6 shots on a steel plate, which provided instant audible assessment to the student before breaking for lunch.

The second half of the course got into more drills, a discussion about reactions time and action lag, and scanning a 360-degree area around the student (keep on the lookout for multiple attackers).

The final phase moved into team and individual shoot-offs which assessed the amount of material retained by each student when external stress was added to the mix. When you take into account the sheets of rains, tornado sirens and the some excellent shooter, the shoot-offs were a very novel way of building tension and forcing students to put into practice what had been learned the first half of the day - now, if my hand would just stop burning from the “GLOCK Finger” affliction, I’d be happy!

GLOCK Finger!
