Father Pfleger, at it again...

The War on Guns Blog picked this up first and it merits reposting here:

Read this first, then a brief analysis at the end:

Chicago Activists Push State Gun Ban

Michael Pfleger and about 50 supporters locked arms and blocked metal detectors and elevators inside a state building in downtown Chicago to highlight their cause Wednesday.

Pfleger says his actions are meant to push state government to change the state’s gun laws.

PFLEGER: It’s the downstate that have refused to give us the votes to common sense gun laws. So what we’re saying is, ‘Ok. We’re gonna start disrupting your life like gun violence is disrupting our life.' And that’s here at their businesses and that’s coming to their homes. And we’re prepared to go to the legislators homes and visit them.

Protestors are calling for an assault weapon ban and stricter background checks for people wanting to buy guns

Paraphrasing WOG, Pfleger encourages breaking laws he doesn't like until more government controls over our private lives and activities are implemented.

On the surface, civil disobedience sounds like a fine continuation of an American tradition, however we should re-examine what Thoreau's major premise was in his defining work:

"That government is best which governs least"

Now, what happens when someone not connected suggests they'd like to disregard laws they opposes and does so to call for less government instead of more? They'd go to jail!

Think about it: If you advocate civil disobedience it is because you're saying that the letter of the law is flawed and subject to realistic disregard. Therefore, asking for more laws after you break some laws is insane!

Marlin 60 Peep Sights.

Tech-SIGHTS, of Rice-Lake Wisconsin, makes military-inspired peep sights for Ruger 10/22's and SKS rifles... The sights mimic the excellent M14 sights - apparently, very nice stuff that a lot of Appleseed attendees are using to shoot the "qualification".

Rumor had it that they made, or were going to make, a peep for the venerable, ever-reliable Marlin 60 (and 795).

Well, I emailed 'em and next month the sight comes out... They were even nice enough to send me a sneak-peek:

Chicago Update

Daley says lag in police hiring not affecting city safety
Mayor Richard Daley on Saturday dismissed the notion that his administration's failure to make good on a pledge to hire more police is affecting public safety, even as Chicago combats growing violent crime.

"No, no," said Daley when asked about the lack of new hires and the impact on safety. When pressed, Daley bristled and said, "It just won't."

Somehow, after reading this next one, I don't believe him...

Officer in "very critical" condition following shooting
A Chicago Police officer remained in “very critical” condition this afternoon after being shot by a convicted felon as police attempted to execute a search warrant on the Southeast Side. The suspect was also critically wounded in the shooting.

The Subprime Crisis in under 10 minutes and an "Appeal to Reason."

Folks, watch this:

At this time in the history of the United States, gun owners face a turning point concerning who we place in office as president. This presidential election has the power to irreversibly impact the rights of gun owners, both with the power of Presidential veto and through placing a blatant anti-gunner in office as the President of the Senate. At present there is a 2 or 3 vote pro-gun majority in the US Senate. We do not need a confirmed vote against us as a tie breaker.

The next US President will likely appoint at least one, perhaps three Supreme Court Justices who will consider the meaning of the second amendment in upcoming legal battles. The narrow SCOTUS majority for gun owners shown in Heller v DC could be overturned by a single appointment. At least three appointments are likely. Justice John Paul Stevens is 88 years old. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75. Justice Antonin Scalia is 72. Gun owners in the United States could be irrevocably affected for the next fifty years, perhaps forever. Gun rights could be erased as a generation of gun owners die off stripped of their firearms, leaving an apathetic progeny that has never experienced the right to keep and bear arms.

This is a crucial time. There is much at stake, and it goes beyond blogs and forums for gun owners. This is not a time to be bickering or fighting among ourselves. This is a time to solidify our vote and make damned sure that the right to keep and bear arms is preserved. The only way to do that is by force multiplication. We must build our numbers. Each gun owner has one vote. We must educate each other on the impact of our votes, and we must convert more people to law abiding voting gun ownership.

NRA Ads that Obama doesn't want you to see!

From Ahab:

Obama's campaign is trying to suppress advertisements run by NRA which expose his anti-gun record. What's crazy is that these ads haven't even started running yet in the markets they were targeted for - but Obama's people are so concerned about the gun and hunting vote that they're actively trying to squash the ads. Here's the letter from Obama's general counsel.

What's kind of funny is that 1) everything that NRA is claiming in these ads is true, and 2) that Obama’s campaign is relying on Factcheck.org's statements of his "record" to disprove NRA's claims.

Nevermind that factcheck.org has been thoroughly discredited as a left wing anti-gun organization, but people should be appalled that Obama is trying to squash the 1st Amendment rights of people with whom he disagrees.

Obama's campaign is so scared of the gun vote that they’re willing to openly try to impede on the freedom of the press and freedom of speech in the name of winning an election.

Barack Obama "Truth Squads"?!?

Da, Tovarich!!

As we enter the proverbial "home stretch" of this election, it seems that Barack Victory at any Cost Obama has decided that suppressing the 1st Amendment and further eviscerating the constitution sounds like a really awesome way to win an election.

China has a Time Machine!

I mean, how else could you explain this? ;)

China Space Mission Article Hits Web Hours Before Launch
BEIJING —
A news story describing a successful launch of China's long-awaited space mission and including detailed dialogue between astronauts launched on the Internet Thursday, hours before the rocket had even left the ground.

The country's official news agency Xinhua posted the article on its Web site Thursday, and remained there for much of the day before it was taken down.

A staffer from the Xinhuanet.com Web site who answered the phone Thursday said the posting of the article was a "technical error" by a technician. The staffer refused to give his name as is common among Chinese officials.

The Shenzhou 7 mission, which will feature China's first-ever spacewalk, is set to launch Thursday from Jiuquan in northwestern China between 9:07 a.m. EDT and 10:27 p.m. EDT.

The arcticle, dated two days from now on Sept. 27, vividly described the rocket in flight, complete with a sharply detailed dialogue between the three astronauts.

Winnebago County CCW Permit Stalled

From the Rockford Register Star:

The Winnebago County Board’s concealed carry subcommittee unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night that essentially allows the sheriff to hire auxiliary deputies.

But that’s a power the sheriff already has according to state statute.

The key difference, committee chairman Tom Owens said, is“encouraging him to utilize that to the fullest extent that he can.”

Still, the practical result won’t give residents who want to carry firearms in the county what most probably believe they would get if a concealed carry resolution passed.

Auxiliary deputies can only carry a firearm while they are on direct assignment from the sheriff and they have to be in uniform while they do it. Once the assignment is up, the uniform comes off and the firearm can’t be legally carried in this state.

Furthermore, the law limits the scope of what kind of assignments a sheriff can assign an auxiliary deputy to do. Helping direct traffic is one such assignment, as is helping in the aftermath of a disaster. Fighting crime is not.

Some More Ideas for the Public Range

One of these is not like the other...When I first started practicing with the pistol at the public range, one of the better articles that I bumped into was written by Midwest Training Group then-director Andy Kemp: Drills for the Public Range. Andy's article covers a lot of common-sense basics that can be practiced at the public range and is good medicine for developing a lot of skills. I've put a lot of his ideas into practice while learning and, while I'm nowhere near the same league as Andy as a shooter, I'd like to offer some additional insights that may help develop skills.

Maximize the role of a .22

Wow, ammunition is expensive there days! Worse still, it seems like things are only going to get a worse for a while. With that in mind, I, like many other folks am saving my "real ammunition" for course-based training and matches. The good news is that while the price of .22 has gone up, it is still inexpensive compared to "real ammunition". Several online dealers sell lots of 500 at prices that most folks can justify - ~$20-$30.00

So, right now, you're thinking how this could possible help with shooting larger, "real" bullets. The answer is finding drills that focus on alignment and trigger control and not recoil management. This is the same idea as working on dry-fire drills at home, but with the added bonus of shot validation from actually shooting.

Envision, for a moment, the draw-stroke: the goal is to get the weapon into low-ready and extend into the sight plane. If your range doesn't allow you to work on the draw stroke, simply start from low ready and extend into that first shot.

Another possible alternative is working the roll from position sul into a shot.

Ok, so you might be asking, "What are some other drills that focus on alignment and first-shot placement?" Here are a few more examples:
  • Grab the weapon from the bench and break a shot. Work on quickly firing using coarse aim and fine aim by varying target distance and size.
  • Continuous alternation from strong-hand to weak-hand, firing one shot until the magazine is empty.
  • Use the target below and shoot the large target then force an accurate shot on one of the smaller targets. (And the reverse.)

Plan the Work, then Work the Plan

This sounds so simple, but it seems that a lot of people hit the range and just shoot close targets of turn into machines that excel at spitting out once fired brass. Now, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with that, and if that is your cup of tea, then it's a free country and you can do as you please.

However, if you want to develop/refine certain skills, then you have to consciously change your approach. This involves assessing your skills, choosing a plan of action that'll further your skill-level and a repeat of this process after you've recognized that attained what you initially set out to train for.

Spartan Tactical Training Group Course Review: Officer Down! Disabled Officer Shooting Drills

Double tap.I bought my first revolver in spring of 2003. I specifically choose the wheel gun after reading Massad Ayoob's book on Combat Handgunnery - I just figured that it would be the easiest to practice with, chamber check, store (no magazine springs.), and use in a situation (no safety).  I ran a few boxes of ammunition through her to make sure she went "bang!" each time I pulled the trigger, and while I wasn't a lousy shot, I knew that'd I'd need to practice a fair amount to get things "right".

At that point a lot of my training came from Ayoob's book and Ed McGivern's book "Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting" - I had bought the book after stumbling across it looking for more revolver information/history. At this point, invariably, some folks will stop and wonder how a seemingly dated book on trick shooting from 1938 can actually mesh with Ayoob's "modern" take on pistol shooting - its pretty simple really, while Ayoob gives a lot of tips and ideas, McGiven actually provides a decent lesson plan for the aspiring shooter in Section 20: "Training Law Enforcement Officer. Practical Revolver Shooting Applied to Police Training." At minimum, McGiven had me practicing shooting weak-handed and practicing a decent draw-stroke.

Time went on, I took more courses, bought different guns, and started shooting USPSA - some of the real-world items in McGivern's lesson plan were forgotten because they're basics and not "high speed" super things to do. Until this past Saturday, that is.

I went back for my 5th course with John Krupa and Team Spartan at the Harvey Police Range to run their excellent course "Officer Down! Disabled Officer Shooting Drills". It was surprising that there were only five of us on the range. I'm stretching a guess here, but I think most people want to pay for the "ninja" techniques and not the annoying, difficult, real world techniques that could actually save ones skin.

From the start, Krupa stated that this course focused on familiarization - more than anything Krupa wanted us to understand that while these weren't the best techniques for delivering shots, these were techniques that might be subconsciously available in a bad situation and that even a minimum exposure to them could help save or keep you in the fight.

After paperwork, we dove right in: We worked off a little rust by running through a magazine with two hands, then transitioned to strong-hand for a magazine then weak-hand. After we were done, Krupa presented a simple, reliable method for handling the pistol during the transition and we loaded up and worked that for a few magazines, alternating one shot strong-hand, transition, one-shot weak-hand, rinse-repeat.

Spine left handed. It was amazing to see that most of us could shoot pretty well strong hand and weak-hand, but that we really needed to slow down and think about lining sights up correctly weak-hand. Looks like I know what to practice!

We sat down for a lecture session on one handed reloading and malfunction clearance. Krupa was a big fan of putting the pistol back into the holster in order to reload, stating that at least you'd be able to walk if needed. We also covered the reload between the knees and the Bank Miller "under the arm" technique. From this point forward, we were expected to reload one handed, safely, when shooting with one hand.

We also spent time learning to tap-rack one handed using our knees to tap and our rear sights to "hook" our holsters, belts, etc to work the slide. We also covered the rebound cycle where one bounces the slide off the leg in order to cycle it.

Clearing double feeds were especially tough - the worst is trying to clear a double feed on a Sig Sauer or Glock left handed. Folks, this is tougher than it sounds. With the right hand the slide lever is positioned well, but for lefties, there is almost no way to lock these guns back!

I was initially worried about safety as we headed back to the range - you know, the guy next to you might cross 180 while trying to rack one handed, but my fears were unfounded as Krupa had a pretty good method for us practicing this: we'd clear our guns and load an empty magazine, then work on reloading one handed, then clear the gun again, call the range "safe", scoop the empty magazine and repeat with the opposite hand.

Shortly thereafter, we broke for lunch - which I forgot at home, so I just kept shooting. I bought a long my Advantage Arms .22 conversion and swapped the slide out, loaded up and burned through ~300 rounds of .22 working on the drills. I'll be posting more about this in an upcoming article too.

After lunch we started working from a variety of compromised positions: chair-seated, sitting on the ground, supine (on our backs) and prone. Folks, rolling in the dirt and shooting weak-hand is totally humbling and something that I'll be working on at home with dry fire. We culminated in shooting a continuous roll "vertigo" drill (AKA Mell Gibson's Lethal weapon roll) and it is much tougher than the movie would have you believe.

The course was fairly shooting intensive, we burned through 500 rounds over the course of the afternoon, but I think this course is huge since it covers some important, basic, techniques.

Chicago cops say they are rebelling against chief (AP)

Great, just great. The Cops are "rebelling" against Jody Weis, but you still can't protect yourself. I'm not trying to bust the cops over this, but it is the citizens of Chicago that lose in the end...

CHICAGO (AP) — Serious crime is up but arrests are down in Chicago, and some police officers say they are working the streets less aggressively out of resentment toward their new chief and fear of being second-guessed by him.

"People are doing just what they need to get through" their shifts, said Lt. Robert Weisskopf, president of the Chicago police lieutenants union, "and not any extra."

Friends of the NRA Benefit

Lot of folks went to Donley's Wild West Steakhouse for the annual Friends of the NRA Dinner and Benefit.

They auctioned off 3 long arms, one pistol (1911 Kimber) and held a raffle for several other firearms.

Dinner was good and, while we didn't win prizes, we all went home happy.

BATFE Negligence!

From GunBlogger TamK.

If you had a Federal Firearms License and the BATFE did an audit on you and found that you had 25 weapons on your books that were unaccounted for, they'd yank your license.

If you had a Federal Firearms License and the BATFE did an audit on you and found that you had 50 weapons on your books that were unaccounted for, they'd yank your license, and you'd be seeing them in court when they filed criminal charges against you.

If you were the BATFE, on the other hand, and just plain flat-out lost 76 guns, well... you'd go on with business as usual, making sure that America's gun dealers were keeping their records straight. Unlike you. Because the rules are different for The King's Men.

Look at the report. (PDF)

The Danger of Compliance

From Xavier Thoughts:

On Friday, August 22, twenty-three year old Heather Brammer was working the counter at City Laundry and Cleaners in Manning, South Carolina. Tuxedo rentals had just been adopted as a sideline for the business. Around 10:30AM, a man talking on a cell phone entered the establishment requesting a tuxedo for a wedding, and the young woman helped him pick one out. He was to return at 1:00PM to be measured for his tux.

Around 11:00, Heather was surprised to have the man return early. He said he had changed his mind about the tux. Then he drew a handgun, fired a round into the ceiling and began barking orders at the frightened young woman. "If you set anything off, I’ll kill you. Don’t do anything that’s going to surprise me," he snarled. He demanded that she open the safe and cash register and that she hand over all the money.

Heather did as she was told, both by her assailant, and previously by her employer. She had been instructed by her employer that if she was ever robbed to comply and do as she was told and no harm would come to her. She gave the money to the criminal.

Once the man had the loot, he ordered Heather into the rear of the building and instructed her to lay face down. She did as she was told, expecting no harm to come to her because she complied. Then, the criminal shot Heather Brammer in the back of the head. He left her for dead.

"911 What's your emergency?"
"I've been shot. I just got robbed."
"You've been shot and robbed?"
"Yes."

Heather Brammer had indeed been shot in the back of the head. The gunman's bullet had struck the occipital prominence of her skull and lodged in the bone. She had been unconscious for about twenty minutes. Her arms and legs were numb, and her vision was blurred, but by divine providence, she was alive.

Heather stayed on the telephone with the 911 dispatcher and was transported to a hospital where neurosurgeons cared for her. Although the brain is still bruised from the bullet's impact, she is expected to make a full recovery. Her attacker is still at large.

For those who reject the notion of depending on the graciousness of criminals or divine intervention to preserve their lives in a lethal encounter, there is another path, another way. Begin to take your life into your own hands. Decide that you will not count on compliance to convince a criminal not to kill you. Frankly, the criminal does not care if you are compliant or not. He is following through with a plan that he has already scripted. From robberies and muggings to crimes such as the Wichita Massacre, a criminal's victims are only humanless characters in a violent melodrama of egocentrism playing in his head.

As Heather Brammer was asked by Meredith Vieira, "You could do what he says or you could run........ What was going through your mind?" I wanted to pound my screen. Are those the only choices you can think of Meredith? How about taking cover, drawing your own gun? How about being proactive and saving your life with lethal force if need be? Yes, there is another way to self preservation. Buy a gun and make up your mind to use it to save your life. Train to use it to save your life. Use it to save your life. Dependence on a criminal's generosity is a path fraught with risk. Heather Brammer is was a very lucky young woman. I hope she is planning on going armed from here forward.

August Action Shooting Sports Association Event Recap.

Wilmot CafeWhat a gorgeous day to be outside shooting - The sun was shining and the sky was blue with happy, puffy white clouds! Beforehand, Jerry G. and I met at Linda's Wilmot Cafe, which serves up a great bit of breakfast fare in a friendly atmosphere, and then headed on over to Bristol for the match.

The guys at ASSA set up the night before and coach new shooters through a safety/Q&A session, then settle in to a little practice. They generally run two courses of fire. Both COF's are geared towards pistols, one of which can be shot with a pistol caliber carbine (MP5's and UZI's are ok!!), while the other is setup with a shotgun section.

Jerry G. ran his ancient, shot-out ;) - what is it now, 70,000 rds? - Para hicap .45 and I, again, ran my Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit (how much does ammo cast again?!?!) on my GLOCK frame.

We broke in to two sqauds and headed to our respective courses of fire.

First stage started out with the pistol - engage targets while seated, then run to some cover engage a plate rack, reload and engage a popper that obscured a clay-pigeon. Break the pigeon, then carry an ammo can and shoot one handed at four targets. Easy enough...

Seated

Carbine shooters ran the same course, firing from seated, then standing to engage targest at ~25 yards. Pistol shooters could opt to shoot the pistol course of fire again.

 Stop the Pigeon!

The next stages started with a 9 rounds shotgun course of fire, after which we transitioned to pistol and shot a good mix of steel and paper while on the move.

Finally, we were run through the stress shoot-off course by shooting the 6-shot plate rack using pistols for time - I think Jerry was ~10 seconds. Me an my soft recoiling .22 cleaned up the competition at 6 + "hope and change" seconds...

In Writing - Obama Supports a AWB.

He says he supports the 2nd Amendment, but he's for an "Assault Weapon Ban" because he states that they're used for criminal purposes, even through the FBI states that they aren't.

Dear *.:

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun policy. I appreciate hearing your perspective on this important issue.

I respect the Second Amendment and responsible gun ownership. But I am also concerned about the human consequences of guns falling into the wrong hands and being misused. I do not find objectionable the goal of keeping firearms out of the hands of children, terrorists, gang members and criminals in general. The question for me is how to best accomplish that goal without abridging the rights of hunters, sportsmen, and other legitimate gun owners. As I consider gun legislation, I will work to find the appropriate balance between these two objectives.

For example, Senator David Vitter (R-LA), in response to complaints about the confiscation of firearms during the recovery from Hurricane Katrina, offered an amendment that would prohibit such confiscations in areas hit by natural disaster. I voted with Senator Vitter on this amendment. On the other hand, I support the re-imposition of the ban on the sale of assault weapons that expired in September 2004 because I believe these guns are used primarily for criminal rather than sporting intent. I also support requiring gun manufacturers to install child safety locks on all of their products.

Again, I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. I do not believe that these two principles – the individual right and the rights of a community to maintain public safety – are contradictory.

On June 26, 2008, the Supreme Court endorsed that same view. Although it ruled that the D.C. gun ban went too far, Justice Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe.

Anyone who lives in a large urban center like Chicago is aware of the terrible toll gun violence is taking on American society. As a statewide elected official who has traveled our state extensively, I appreciate how strongly sportsmen, hunters and collectors feel about their rights to own firearms. But I am convinced we can more aggressively attack the problem of gun violence without interfering with the rights of responsible gun owners.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I look forward to keeping in touch.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
United States Senator

Gustav: National Guard Exchange Gunfire with Looters.

Just FYI - This is why it is good to be prepared in a disaster. If looters are willing to fire on the National Guard, what makes anyone think that they'll play nice with mere residents/civilians?

BATON ROUGE -- Three National Guard troops exchanged gunfire with unidentified assailants last night while protecting hurricane-relief supply trucks in Ville Platte, Gov. Bobby Jindal said this morning.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. in an area dark from loss of power.

The soldiers were guarding FEMA supply trucks that were in a staging area awaiting deployment to a goods distribution site, Louisiana National Guard spokesman Mike Kazmierzak said. Guard members normally accompany FEMA logistics operations, he said.

UK Bans Angelina Jolie "Wanted" Movie Posters

In the UK, it is not PC to show a gun - and therefore to get you in line they'll censor your art, etc.

From Reuters:

Jolie posters not "Wanted" in UK, watchdog rules
LONDON (Reuters) - Angelina Jolie might ooze Hollywood glamour, but if she's armed and looking dangerous, the actress is not welcome in Britain.

Britain's media watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), has banned two posters of Jolie promoting the film "Wanted" after upholding complaints that the images of the gun-toting actress glamorized the use of guns and violence.

While I'll agree that I think there are far too many movies glamorizing violence and gun play, I don't think that sweeping anything under the rug by banning it is good sense.

More Kirk-Bloomberg Thinking.

RINO!

We roll out our handy "RINO ban-ner" again since Mark Kirk is at it again!

Kirk unrolled H.R. 6664 which seeks to close the "firesale" loophole...

What is the firesale loophole?

Under current law, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) issues Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs) to qualifying gun dealers, which are required to conduct background checks on potential buyers.  A license may be revoked if a dealer willfully violates the law or engages in criminal activity.  But due to the fire sale loophole, after a license is revoked the dealer may legally sell excess inventory as a “private seller” without conducting any background checks.

Sounds sinister, right?

But it's a sham, folks.

Here's an analogy: imagine you own an Italian/pizza restaurant which has a bar. You get closed down for some violation, say a health code violation do to bad plumbing. Your friends know the real deal and know it isn't roaches or improper storage, but your competition takes over and there is no way you'll be able to get ahead.

So, you're left with all this food and liquor. What to do?

Being a smart entreprenuer, since it is close to football season you decide to throw non-stop weekend parties at your place and serve the leftovers (pasta and pizza) and beverages (beer, mainly - some harder stuff...).

Since it is your property and your house, you're able to do that.

This is almost exactly the same for many Gunstore owners - the BATFE has shut down numerous dealers on minor technicalities, such as clerical errors. If the owner decides to close the business, then they're left with a boat-load of inventory which they can sell face to face to law-abiding owners if they reside in a states that permits private sales.

This is what Kirk wants to assail - your right to broker your property as you see fit.

Don't believe me? Just check out what Supreme Court lawyer, David Hardy has to say about the BATFE (and Red's Trading Post in Idaho). To boot, the Inspector General is actually looking at the BATFE for possible abuses...

The Washington Times ran an op-ed by John Lott calling Obama's position on the 2nd Amendment into question. Read the whole thing here.

The day the Supreme Court struck down Washington, D.C.'s gun ban, Mr. Obama claimed the court's decision merely ratified his own position. He told Fox News he had "said consistently that I believe that the Second Amendment is an individual right, and that was the essential decision that the Supreme Court came down on." So, has Mr. Obama consistently supported individuals' rights to own guns and opposed the D.C. handgun ban? Last November, Mr. Obama's campaign told the Chicago Tribune that "Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional." After the Illinois senator's statement supporting the Supreme Court striking down the ban, the campaign quickly disowned the Chicago Tribune quote as a staffer's "inartful attempt" to characterize his position.

Combine this with the following:

A candidate questionnaire shows that Mr. Obama supported a ban on handguns in 1996. In 1998, he backed a ban on the sale of all semiautomatic guns (a ban that would encompass the vast majority of guns sold in the U.S.) In 2004, he advocated banning gun sales within five miles of a school or park (essentially a ban on all guns sold in almost all the states). Possibly, even more importantly, he served on the board of the Joyce Foundation, probably the largest private funder of anti-gun and pro-ban groups and research in the country.

I can respect Democratic candidates that put their money where their mouth is regarding "gun issues" - people like Brain Schwitzer (Gov. Montana) and Bill Richardson (Gov. of New Mexico) -  but Obama's stance is lock-step with the those of the Chicago political machine.

Folks out there reading this from states other than Illinois: You see what we're up against here because of Daley's political influence. We're an entire county away and we can't escape it! Stop for a moment and imagine how bad it'd be if someone like that influenced the entire country...
